Getting Vaccinated? Reading this could help

Posted on 14 May 202114 May 2021 by Mayuri Sharrma

Disclaimer: The contents of this post are a compilation of my personal thoughts and experiences.  I am Vaccinated, having taken both my shots, and I am often asked these questions, which I thought I would answer through my blog post. The contents of this post are NOT a substitute for medical advice and should not be treated as thus.

‘Covid’ is no longer an alien word nor are the words, ‘Vaccine’ and ‘Vaccinated’. With the Pandemic showing no sign of abating, getting Vaccinated is the only way to save ourselves from this Virus we are all helpless against.

What is the Vaccine and what does it do?

The COVID-19 vaccines produce protection against the disease, as a result of developing an immune response to the SARS-Cov-2 virus. Developing immunity through vaccination means there is a reduced risk of developing the illness and its consequences. This immunity helps you fight the virus if exposed. (courtesy Google)

Which Vaccine should I take?

As of today, there are 2 variants of the Vaccine available in India; Covishield and Covaxin.

While both Vaccines help boost your immunity and create antibodies to fight the virus, both being compared to the other, in the terms of which is better is an endless argument. Covishield is more widely available in most places in India, compared to Covaxin. If you have any underlying health conditions it is best you consult your Doctor for advice on which one to take.

The time gap for;

Covishield is 45-56 days

Covaxin is 28 days

Where can I take the Vaccine?

There are two Mobile Apps where you can register for the vaccine, Aarogya Setu and CoWin. The latter can also be accessed via a Website.

You will need a valid mobile number to register, as an OTP (One Time Password) will be sent to you on the mobile number you register from.

For 1st time registrations, you will be required to fill in relevant details like name, age location and asked to upload a soft copy of a photo identity like a Pan Card, Voter Card, Valid Passport, Adhar Card, Driving License.

Pro tip: Login to the @cowinalertsbot via the Telegram Mobile App to get alerts about free vaccination slots available near you.

Do we have to pay for the Vaccine or is it free?

If you choose to get Vaccinated at a private hospital there will be a charge that varies, from 250-900/ INR

Government hospitals, clinics, and centers are where you can get Vaccinated free of cost.

What are the side effects of the Vaccine?

Having any side effects is not a must. However, in some people feeling feverish, getting a headache, and body ache, the arm which you got vaccinated on hurting/feeling heavy is common. These side effects last for 2-4 days. The doctor on duty advised me to have a Paracetamol like Dolo 650 if I faced them. Please ask your doctor for advice.

Before Taking the Vaccine:

Register on the app of choice by choosing the date and time slot that works for you.

See to it that you get a confirmation SMS after you have registered.

Carry the identity proof you uploaded, along with your Adhar Card, and a printout or soft copy of your Vaccine Slot confirmation on your app.

As a 1st timer, you will be required to register at the center and pay if it’s a private hospital you have chosen.

For your 2nd dose, your registration will only be re-confirmed.

Do not go on an empty stomach for your vaccination.

Be honest about any pre-existing health conditions you may have. If under medication, please consult your doctor if you should take them before taking the vaccine.

Wear comfortable clothing and a top/shirt/kurta/blouse/t-shirt that will give the staff easy access to your upper arm, below your shoulder.

Carry a hand sanitizer a bottle of water and a packet of biscuits with you, as you don’t know how long it might take.

Follow the rules, maintain social distance, and be patient with the staff who are doing their best.

After taking the Vaccine:

You will be required to wait at the center for half an hour, to monitor any changes, if at all, the vaccination brings.

It is best to rest at home on the day you get Vaccinated.

Post Vaccination the immunity of the body dips so that it can produce antibodies to protect you. This is why it is advisable to maintain social distance, mask up and sanitize your hands frequently.

If I take the Vaccine, I won’t have to wear the Mask and can’t get Covid?

Getting Vaccinated does not mean that you won’t get Covid. Getting Vaccinated will save you from the life-threatening effects of the disease.

Mask up. Maintain Social Distancing. Sanitize. Keep your energy and frame of mind high and let’s hope life gets to being normal soon.

I’ve asked and answered many of these questions before and after vaccination. Next time I’ll refer them to this post. I’ve taken one Covishield shot and apart from some pain in the vaccinated area there was thankfully no discomfort.
