Cooking for a Cause: An Evening with Sashi Cheliah and Sumeru

If you are an ardent watcher of the MasterChef Australia annual series the name Sashi Cheliah will have you smiling as soon as you read it. However, if you don’t watch this amazing television program let me introduce him to you.

Sashi Cheliah was one of the contestants in the Season 10 of MasterChef Australia. Of Indian origin, Sashi was raised in Singapore and lived there, working with the Singapore Police Force, before he moved with his family to Adelaide, Australia.

In Australia Sashi worked as a Prison Guard, cooking as a hobby from the memory of watching his Mother and Aunts cook when he was a child.

MasterChef Australia gave Cheliah the platform he craved, to showcase his cooking skills even as he bettered them, and to bring to the fore recipes from his family and country.

His cheerful countenance and exemplary cooking ensured he was also a favourite too throughout and after the competition. Sashi Cheliah won the viewers hearts and the trophy too and soon became a household name.

Sashi was in Chennai recently for a very noble cause, to facilitate which an event, ‘Classroom Kitchen – A Master Class  by Sashi Cheliah’ was held over 2 days, on Saturday, 31st August and Sunday the 1st of September, at The Flying Elephant in Park Hyatt in Chennai.

Both the events were completely sold out and packed, with people from all age groups. Sashi Cheliah charmed the audience with his warmth even as he whipped up his award winning dish, ‘Crispy Prawn Heads with a Herb Salad’. 

The proceeds from these events went towards the aid of a brighter future for underprivileged children, presented by Sumeru in association with MMRT42. The aim is to construct classrooms and a school infrastructure. Such a noble cause, isn’t it?
