The Plot:
Dr Brian Weiss is a traditional Psychotherapist. A young girl, Catherine, seeks him out for therapy, to deal with her phobias and anxiety.
When conventional methods of therapy fail to help her overcome her symptoms, Dr Weiss decides to hypnotise Catherine.
As Catherine goes further and further into the lifetimes she’s lived through before, she finds out that the causes for her anxiety and phobia are related to what happened to her in those previous lifetimes.
Under Hypnotherapy Catherine realises that she has lived 86 lives in all.
As the therapy progress, her present life health issues begin changing for the better, as does Catherine. At this stage the ‘Masters’ come forth and communicate with Dr Weiss imparting their wisdom and lessons to him.
With the therapy coming to an end everything has changed for Catherine and Dr Weiss, and they both look at new beginnings.
My Thoughts:
I first picked up this book about a decade ago and try as I might I just couldn’t get myself to read it. I gave up trying. This happened a couple of times.
Last week, I picked it up once more, and read it in one go.
To say I am a skeptic when it comes to past life and Karma would be an understatement. I have never believed in past lives and I recently stopped believing in Karma too. Having said that, I am always open to different views, beliefs and opinions. Which is why I started reading this book with a curious and open mind.
The book is written from Dr Weiss’s point of view and he states that he shares what went on in Catherine’s therapy almost ad verbatim.
The writing is simple and easy and the revelations of her past life are intriguing. It was astonishing to know how phobias of the present life are connected to what may have happened to us in our past lives.
The fact that the real identity of Catherine was never revealed, even though the book turned out to be a multi-million dollar best seller, is a sore point that stops me short of being convinced to give this story a chance. Also, the Masters appearing and imparting wisdom seemed a bit dramatic. What rankled was it all seemed to be neatly done and wrapped prettily with a bow.
The book made for a good story, yes. Not for a convincing one though.

I am one those confused soul when it comes to beliefs in Karma 🙂 Much as I want to belive in int, very often I shrug the whole concept off… But that doesnt stop me from reading this genre. Catherine and her 86 lives did you say? Now thats something interesting.

I’m a firm believer in Karma. I have seen it take its due on many many people and I know how much they deserved it. This concept feels weird, past lives and reincarnation all seem very Ekta Kapoorish to me.

I am not much of believer yet the story sounds interesting. i’d perhaps pick it up and enjoy it like fiction. But I still need to know why you couldn’t read it the first few times.

The same thing happened… I cldnt read it for many years. Then one day it was picked up and completed within a few days.
But I believed a lot in the book. And I have also gone through PLR myself. Both before and after the book.
Thanks for reading. I have many friends who have had, and benefited from PLR. What didn’t go down well with me was that there was no proof to back his claim.
I read it a few years ago and listened to other books of Dr. Weiss on Audible. I would like to believe what Dr. Weiss wrote though I am skeptical. Dr. Weiss’s workshops cost a small fortune to attend and my better judgment says to write him off as a scammer.
