We are no longer friends
Too far from being enemies just yet
We are practicing our moves
The stage is set.
We invisibly circle each other
Readying for an attack
We bruise each other with words
Careful to see to it that we use tact.
Our defenses are up, emotional arms and ammunition are ready
We are holding each other’s gaze, all slow and steady.
Waiting to see who will be the first one to blink
This silence is punishing, pushing us over the brink.
We were so close once.
That was a long time ago
Though we are still far away
From being called foes.

Nice, deep and contemplative. Love the tastefulness of this one. Not so close and far from being foes.. It’s like two people can’t pretend to be strangers once they have loved each other. Thank you for being a part of #UMeUBlogHop. Enjoying this. #Jokerophilia

Gave me the “frenemy” feel but loss is nevertheless a loss. Well elucidated.
Sometimes relationships do get redefined and change with time and become hazy. Quite a thought-provoking piece.
I loved the way you have portrayed the emotions, how love can wane and yet not completely dissolve. ‘We invisibly circle each other’
Powerful imagery you have used

I loved this interpretation of UMeU Mayuri, I expected a twist towards the end as I devoured the build up but then realised it was the intense feeling of the transition that I was suppose to delve in. Loved the composition.
Well expressed, Mayuri.
New relationship indeed that keeps them on their toes.
Earlier they were friends. And now they are not foes.
Hope things get better & they again get close. 🙂
Such an honest poem. The silence is punishing and loved the last line too. We all have someone like this in our lives. Loved reading it.
Once a beautiful relationship when makes you feel like this.. You are heart broken. But this is life. I do have people in my life where I share these feeling. So beautiful penned Mayuri .
That’s a nice one, neither the best of friends now, nor even foes.
Really like the lines – the tact full bruises and emotional arms.
Deep thought, says a lot.
So much gets changed forever when two people interact intimately. Poetically apt
Lovely take on delicate relations. Reminds me of a few I lost on the way and your poem absolutely mirrors my feelings.
It is like still they are waiting not to be called foes. That shows a relationship can be a mixture of emotions.
To the point with deep lines that convey heavy emotions, wonderfully pieced together.
Mayuri, I can so relate to it. The phase when the relationship starts to become sore and you are still trying to save it from dying…so well put in a verse. A wonderful read 🙂
Love can never fade … though lack of it can be dealt with indifference anger but live can never metamorphose to hate

Wow-what a choice of words to explain this new relationship. We are practicing our moves
The stage is set….Loved each line of this poem. Always been a fan of your writing skill.
This poem struck a chord. The relationship with someone who is not a friend but used to great friend before is highly complicated. ” We bruise each other with words” – so nicely said.
Ouch! I know this feeling and I know how bad it stings.
This middle zone where one is stuck up being ‘almost’ is the most killing. Almost a friend but not quite. Almost an enemy, but not there yet.
This nameless unspecified zone where one can only spill the hurt in poetry and prevent it from becoming the ‘poison’ of indifference.
Your poem stirred up many emotions in me. I feel ya!
“Though we are still far away
From being called foes.”
The above lines just added a new level to the whole poem. When two people bond, a lot changes, and nothing can go back to how it was before! It is an emotional, heartwarming, and very deep poem showcasing human emotions! Loved it, Mayuri and you are a pro when it comes to the portrayal of emotions!
Thanks so much, Chinu.
The complexity and the simplicity of love….so much depth in few words, Mayuri.
Thank you, Janaki.
You have beautifully portrayed the depth of the relations, who may be no longer at their best but not ready to vacant the place from each other’s hearts. Truly in the love of the lines “Though we are still far away, From being called foes.”
Thanks so much, Archana.
That was deep Mayuri! People living under one roof can have chaos secretly. Loved how you touched the pang and deafening silence in words.
Thanks so much, Pragnya.
Loved the way you have identified the thin line between friendship and enmity. Though we all have experienced this, only you could bring it to the forefront so beautifully! I call you a wordsmith for a reason! Loved this one!
Thanks so much, for always being so encouraging, Mayura.
A well-expressed piece with beautiful imagery depicting a phase of life when you are neither into it nor can do without it
Thank you, Leela.
For me, it is the truth. I lived this emotion and this kind of changed relationship. It feels good and not so good at the same time. Your words show how deep the emotions are.
Thank you, Neha.
