Prompt: A routine you didn’t know you needed.
I make my bed every morning.
Yes. That’s it.
No life coach, no alarmed-to-tell-me-I’m-a-new-adult guru, just me and my sheets. (Though honestly, if life coaches knew how transformative this was, they’d start charging extra.)
At first, I thought, “Who cares? The bed’s just going to get messy again.”
True. But somewhere between tugging the sheets tight and fluffing the pillows, I realised something unexpected: I felt lighter. It’s a strange kind of satisfaction, seeing order where chaos could exist.
A small, deliberate victory before the first chai of the day.
A corner of the world perfectly aligned, even if the rest of it wasn’t. (Which, let’s be honest, usually isn’t.)
And then, a ripple effect.
I poured my tea more slowly, noticing the aroma. I lingered at the window for thirty seconds, watching the sun spill across my room. I smiled at myself in the mirror, because why not? The bed was made. I deserved it.
Somewhere in that moment, I realised something even bigger: Making the bed made me feel I could lead my life, my day, instead of letting it lead me. That tiny act of taking control over one small corner of my world reminded me I could do the same with everything else. (Yes, even emails and my messy inbox.)
Before long, this tiny morning ritual became my anchor. Not perfection. Not aesthetic bragging rights. Care. Simple, quiet care for myself and the start of my day.
I began adding little touches: A favourite mug for chai. A sprig of mint in water. A window cracked open just enough to hear birdsong.
(Okay, fine, sometimes I even do a tiny happy dance while fluffing the pillows. Don’t judge.)
Suddenly, I noticed other routines I had ignored: stretching before bed, journaling for five minutes, even just taking a breath before checking my phone. The world didn’t change. Life was still chaotic. Bills. Emails. Deadlines. Drama. But my corner of it? Manageable. Predictable. Calm.
And here’s the kicker: I didn’t realise I needed this.
I didn’t know that a made bed could remind me that I am allowed to start my day on my terms, that small rituals build small victories, and small victories quietly build a life you actually want to live.
Some routines aren’t flashy. They don’t make headlines or trend on social media. They just quietly shape you.
Who knew smoothing a bed cover could teach me so much about showing up for myself and leading my own life? (And yes, I highly recommend trying it. Your sheets will never look better, and your brain might just thank you.)
