Nobody talks about this, but JOY has terrible timing. It doesn’t show up when you’re actively hunting it, while lighting candles, journaling with your fanciest pen, or curating the “perfect morning routine.” No. Joy prefers to go rogue. It shows up when your hair looks like a crime scene, your T-shirt has a mysterious stain, and your lunch is more “comfort” than “clean eating.”
The Rogue Moments That Surprise Us
Last week, I was scrolling through my phone, thinking about everything that wasn’t going right. Then—bam!—a tiny spark hit me. A laugh from a random memory, a silly text from a friend, a song lyric that hit differently. That was joy, unannounced, popping in like a rogue agent with a mission: make you smile.
Sometimes joy is in the small, indulgent things, an aesthetically pleasing manicure, the perfect Matcha, a few quiet moments listening to your favourite song, spotting a Shamrock. These are the little moments that feel rogue because you weren’t expecting them, yet they make the day feel lighter.

Stop Chasing, Start Experiencing
Here’s the thing about joy: it cannot be forced, scheduled, or bottled. We spend so much time chasing happiness, reading self-help books, following “mindful living tips,” or waiting for the perfect moment, that we miss the small, messy, real moments where joy actually lives. Joy is in the chaos, in the unexpected, in the quiet nudge that reminds you life isn’t only about checking boxes.
Celebrate the Chaos
When you stop trying to control it, joy finds its way to you. Sometimes it comes disguised as a spilt coffee, a hilarious text thread, or even a random December breeze that makes you pause and smile. And when it does, don’t question it. Laugh, soak it in, and maybe even celebrate the chaos it brings.
So, if you’re waiting for joy to knock politely at your door, here’s a tip: stop waiting. Let joy be rogue. Let it sneak in. Let it barge in. Let it surprise you. Because the most memorable happiness is the kind that shows up when you least expect it, and leaves a little sparkle in your day.
