In my book…

Posted on 12 April 20069 February 2025 By Deliciously Alive

Blog-browsing on a lazy afternoon led me to fellow-Caferatian Indi’s blog where I came across this book quiz which I just HAD to have on mine!
And here it is!
Tra,La,La! Anything to do with books makes me happy!:))

A word about Indi:) She is a super writer who uses the minimum of words for maximum effect. I slot her writing in my “must read, must learn, must-write-like-her-someday slot.”

*************************************************************************************

1. What is the total number of books you’ve owned?
Anything between 200-300 at last count.

2 . What are the last books you bought?
The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
The Ground Beneath Her Feet – Salman Rushdie
Maximum City – Suketu Mehta
Two Lives – Vikram Seth
Smell – Radhika Jha
Ancient Promises – Jaishree Misra
The Shadow Lines – Amitava Ghosh
Short Stories – Somerset Maugham

3. What is the last book you’ve read?
The Kite Runner …and I would recommend it to everyone.
My Review

4. What are you currently reading?
Maximum City – Suketu Mehta. It’s a book about my favorite city in the world, Bombay, so I am being incredibly patient and keeping my fingers crossed (though it gets complicated when you want to turn the page) that it starts getting interesting soon.
STOP PRESS!
I abandoned the above book and am through with reading “Smell” by Radhika Jha, and it’s bloody fantastic!A confident, extremely well-written debut!More on that later!:))))

5. What five books have meant a lot to you or that you particularly enjoyed?
I read this quote once, “A man and a book come into your life when you need them the most,” and I find it to be very accurate (though just between you and me, menfolk are pretty rare coming along 😉

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho appeared, actually was gifted, and was at an opportune moment, and life hasn’t been the same again.

God on a Harley by Joan Brady (don’t bother reading it, guys, it is chick-lit 😉 was a birthday present and appropriately timed, once again (Just a bit of Trivia: I finished reading the book in an hour)

Misery and Thinner, both by Stephen King. These books unfurled my wicked imagination and taught me not all evil is bad.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. Reading it was just pure, unadulterated pleasure.

The Fight Club & Choke, both by Chuck Palahniuk. Very violent, very lovely!;)

There are lots more, but these are what first come to mind.

6. What book(s) would you wish to buy next?
The Namesake – Jhumpa Lahiri

7. What book(s) caught your attention but you never had a chance to read?
The above

8. What book(s) have you owned for so long but never read?
Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf had multiple uses. It was a super cure for my insomnia. I used it to hide money (it was the safest place as no one would touch it!) used it as a doorstop and sometimes as a pillow (damn uncomfortable) I flung it at my sister once, in a fit or rage, but it narrowly missed her and she’s still around. And yes, we talk too.

Vikram Seth’s book Two Lives is garbage! I think he is pretty overrated!

The Monk sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma. Balderdash! And so obviously heavily inspired by Paulo Coelho. Didn’t go beyond the first three chapters.

Other than that, I read any book ASAP.

9. Who will you pass this stick to (3 persons) and why?
All book lovers are welcome to it 🙂
