Dal Bread : A one pot meal

Dal-Bread-Sirimiri

Dal-Bread is a family favourite. I grew up eating Dal Bread so I am unsure whether this dish exists or it is something my ingenious Mom rustled up.

Leftover Dal, preferably Tur or Moong Dal cooked the simple way, and a day old Bread work best for this one-pot meal. However, let that not stop you from cooking fresh Dal or using fresh bread.

This delicious and fulfilling meal can be had for breakfast, as a snack or for a meal.

Ingredients:

2 Pavs or 4-5 slices of Bread (White or Brown, you could use either)

1 cup cooked Dal

½ cup Water

1/s Tsp Oil

1 Tsp, or to taste, Lime Juice

½ Tsp, or to taste, Red Chilly Powder

½ Tsp, or to taste, Haldi or Turmeric Powder

2 Green Chillies, slit

5-6 curry leaves

Salt, to taste.

For the Garnishing:

½ a medium sized Onion, Chopped fine.

1 small Green Chilly, chopped fine.

Coriander Leaves, washed and chopped fine.

Method:

Heat the oil in a pan.

Slip in the green chillies and curry leaves and saute for a bit.

Add the cooked Dal to it along with the water.

Mix well till your Dal is a watery consistency. If it is still thick you could add a little more water.

Add the Red Chilly Powder, Haldi and Salt and mix well.

Once the Dal starts boiling, lower the flame and add the Lime Juice and give it a good stir.

Rip the bread roughly into small pieces and add to the boiling Dal.

Mix well and keep boiling on a medium flame till the Bread starts absorbing the Dal and the mixture starts thickening.

Let it cook till the bread is soaked with the Dal and the mixture is thick.

Switch off the flame, garnish with the onions, chillies, chopped coriander and a dash of lemon juice and serve hot.

If calories don’t count or you are in an indulgent mood, top the garnishing with any spicy and savory mixture , like Chivda, at hand.

  1. Yummy. Never heard of this dish before but surely going o try it. Many times we have left over dal which I normally use for dal parathas the next day. This is innovative and different.
