Genre:  Fiction. Short stories

The Plot: Life is made up of a myriad of emotions and situations. From bittersweet to ecstatic. From loneliness to solidarity. With her debut book of Short Stories, Of Swans and Songs, Rohini Paranjpe Sathe presents all facets of life to us, through stories centered around everyday people and situations.

My Thoughts:

Of  Swans and Songs: The title story is about an extramarital affair and what it does to a family. Rohini has showcased the feelings of ‘the other woman’ with compassion and subtly shaded the wife in shades of grey. This was my favourite story and it left me misty-eyed.

Amma: A legendary Classical Singer. Her Music. Her Memories. All are brought together by her biographer. A memorable story. Rohini’s words will conjure up Amma for you.

A Happy Diwali: This story has it all. Fireworks, Diwali Bombs. The brilliance of sparklers. The fragrance of tradition and the sweetness of bonds.

Finding Shobha: A pre-menopausal Tution Teacher tries to make sense of her life and the recent changes in it. An adorable stories women will identify with.

Anuja Grows Up: What happens when skeletons in a family closet tumble out? Is the family ripped apart, or does it come closer?

The Messenger: When our loved one pass on to another world, do they really leave? Or do they continue to watch over us? This story will make you think of an answer.

When the Girl Died: Holds a mirror upto society and each of us. It is a harsh reminder that we are all good at talking about change and justice but very few walk the talk when it comes to it.

Author Rohini Paranjpe Sathe writes with compassion. She presents the other side of people and situations , making you rethinking about the judgments you may have formed. Her language is simple and crisp. A special mention to the beautiful cover.

It’s been a while since I read an Indian author and stories set in India. Reading Of Swans and Songs by Rohini Paranjpe Sathe felt like coming home to a meal of Dal Chawal. It comforts you, satiates your mind and soul and makes you believe that all is well with the world.

**** 4 Stars to Of Swans and Songs by Rohini Sathe Paranjpe.
