The Plot: If you thought home-made Desserts meant Kheer or Mithai and Cold Drinks meant Tang or Nimbu Paani, this book will make you think again. As the title says, this is a book where you’ll find recipes of Virgin Mocktails and Decadent Desserts. A recipe book with bells and whistles, the recipes featured here are not the ones you would find in regular, or even well known, recipe books.

My Thought: When I plan a menu for a party, or even a family lunch, I first decide what the Dessert should be and work the whole menu around that. Yes, that is how important a Dessert is to me. For the past few years I have been leaning towards making almost all my Desserts at home, as that means I know exactly what goes into them and they are as chemical and preservative free as possible. Living is city that ranges from hot, hotter to hottest we are forever on the look out to make natural and refreshing drinks at home, for us and our guests, as drinks that come in bottles and tetra-pack’s are a big no.

When I read Harjeet Kaur’s Sugar & Ice & All That’s Nice, I realised that I hit a jackpot. This book is a treasure trove of recipes for unusual Drinks and Desserts.

From Moringa Masala Buttermilk to Mojito’s, to  drinks I had never heard of , like Gond Katira or Tragacanth Gum Drink and Ice Apple Sherbet. Iced Tea is always my drink of choice and Harjeet presents it in two amazing flavours, Pomegranate and hold your breath, Aam Panna!

You’ll also find recipes for Mango Puri, Jamun Popsicle and Apple Kheer. Yes, Harjeet is the master of transforming a common recipe into an exotic one.

The recipes and method are easy to follow. Along with the recipes there are little tips to guide you right. Some recipes also feature substitutes, in case you don’t have a certain ingredient on hand, or to enhance the taste or alter the flavour. The method of following the recipe is narrated in a conversational style, so when you read them it almost feels like the Author is right there with you guiding you through the process. Little anecdotes stud the book sporadically.

Harjeet loves innovating in the kitchen, that is a given. She also takes that extra care to plate and present her Desserts and Drinks beautifully. The proof of which is in the pudding…I mean, the stunning pictures which serve to enhance the narrative (and made me drool)

A special mention to the crisp, and visually appealing format of the book.
