10 Day ‘You’ Challenge: 3 Movies

A few years ago I watched Amar Prem on television and that film has made a place in my heart. 2 Adults and 1 Child, all 3 unwanted by their families and society , come together and create a beautiful relationship based on pure love. Super songs that linger in memory were an added bonus.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna – I am an unabashed Karan Johar fan. I watch every film he makes. I was hesitant to watch KANK when it released though, as it got a lot of bad press. But watch I did and it went on to become my favorite film by Karan Johar yet, where he has explored the intricacies of human behaviour and relationship is such a subtle and classy way.

Maleficent A lazy Sunday afternoon led me to discover this film and I wondered how had I missed it when it released! Angelina Jolie, looking absolutely stunning, and playing character I could so identify with. A fairytale that had matured!

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge : 4 Books

I am truly grateful that I love to Read. With a book in hand you’re never alone. I believe that certain books come to you, almost always at the right time, just when you need them. My list of favorite books is long. Like, really long. But I could safely say that these 4 books shall continue to top the chart in my list every time .

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini  is the undisputed 1st place winner in my list of favorites. I have lost count of how many times I have read it, but it manages to make me cry each time I re-read it.

The Forty Rules of Love by Elif Shafak was a tough book to read, and I put it away midway many times, but was drawn to it every time and as I continued reading it cast its magical spell on me and I was smitten.

The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Divakaruni Banerjee – who is one of my all-time favorite authors. A fictional tale narrated through the eyes of Draupadi. A special mention to the gorgeous cover!

Dying to be Me by Anita Moorjani This is not the kind of genre I read or thought I would. But something compelled me to buy this book and boy, was I glad I did! A positive, enlightening read that answered many questions I was seeking the answers for.

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge : 5 Foods

I am not a fussy eater and can be force fed almost anything, with a chocolate bribe for later

Kadhi-Chawal has been my comfort food for as far as I can remember. The sunny yellow of a spicy tempered Kadhi with fat Onion Pakodas peeking up from it when poured over slender, fragrant grains of Basmati Rice never fail to cheer me up.

Post marriage to a ‘Madrasi’ I have come to realise that Sambhar-Rice is what I want, and cook, when I feel the blues. Tangy Sambhar with baby onions and tubes of Drumstick mixed with steamed rice and a dollop of Ghee. Add Applam (fried papad) and a delicately tempered French Beans and Carrot Poriyal (vegetable fry) and it is the perfect meal.

In my next life I want to be born Italian. I love their food, and their good looking men, that much. Pasta in Pesto Sauce is what I nod a yes to every time, the screaming on the scales follows later. Coarsely ground basil leaves, garlic and pine nuts coating Penne, and a sigh escapes me after the first forkful.

Dal Dhokli is my one pot meal when the craving hits. A sweet and tangy Gujrati style Dal, with a liberal addition of peanuts, in which strips of flattened and flavoured dough (dhoklis) is cooked. Each mouthful is an explosion of taste!

Believe it or faint, but Khichdi is my all-time favourite. When The Husband is traveling and I am all by myself, out comes the Yellow Moong Dal and a bit of rice is added to it. As Ghee heats up I add a dash of Asafoetida (hing) and quickly follow up with Rye, a slit Green chilli and the washed rice and dal. Salt to taste and some turmeric for color and pressure cook it till done. My Grandmother used to say, ‘Khichdi ke chaar yaar, Dahi, Papad, Gud aur Achar/Khichdi has 4 friends, Curd, Poppadams, Jaggery and pickle) and I am not a fan of Pickle, but the other 3 are often accompaniments.

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge: 6 Places

6 Places

Bombay: My birth city, the city where I grew up and the city that shows you that anything is possible.

The Shower: All my best ideas come to me in the shower.

Mountains: I feel at home in the mountains.

My Conscience: I live there and keep it alive, kicking and polished.

In between the pages of a book, is my favourite place to be.

In peoples memories.

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge : 7 Wants

7 Wants

I want my Clone. Really. Someone who’ll do all my work for me, while I just read and write, read and write, read and write, read and write…you get the picture, write right?!

If a Clone isn’t possible, then Dobby ? Please? I’ll go without socks too. Promise.

Trips to Bali & Sri Lanka have been on my travel list forever, but somehow they just haven’t worked out.

A filter between my heart and tongue, as what is in my heart is on my lips, and let me assure you it is not a very good habit to have. For others.

To become a Tech-pro. Hahahahaha, kidding!

I want to start writing columns again. Oh, how I enjoyed the topic discussions, the submissions, the rush of going against deadlines, and finally seeing my words in print! I miss all that!

To learn a dance form. Believe me, for someone who can’t dance to save her life, it is one lofty ambition to have!

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge: 8 Fears

8 Fears

1) Writer’s Block: Any writer who has faced it knows what I’m talking about. I was buried under the Block for 4 long years and it was the most frustrating phase of my writing life.

2) Lizards: They creep me out, big time!

3) Boring People: Boring people who think they are interesting are one of my biggest fears. Sadly, I have a lot of them in my life.

4) Swimming/Water: I have learnt swimming, but can never venture to the deep end of the pool. Water unnerves me.

5) Technology: A cold fear grips my heart when confronted with this ever changing technology. I am woefully tech-challenged.

6) Bad Tea: I dread drinking badly made tea, more so because I am too polite to refuse to do so. I was once offered tea made with Goats Milk. I drank it down and puked as soon as I got home and I was sick for the whole day.

7) Horror Movies: Ironically, I enjoy reading the likes of Stephen King and Dean Koontz but I cannot watch a horror film. If I am made to, I don’t sleep for the entire night, sometimes nights, and I am jumpy during the day.

8) Death: I keep wondering how those last minutes before life leaves you would be and what happens after.

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge : 9 Loves

9 Loves

1)  Myself! Enough said!:)

2)  Reading: I used to read a book a day, I was that voracious a reader AND I also had that much time:-D I can’t keep up with that pace anymore BUT I have to read every day, it is a must!

3) Walking: My preferred mode of transport is Walking. I love long walks, alone or with my music.

4) Movies: Watching a film in a theatre, to be specific. When the lights go out and it is just you and the characters on screen,  that is akin to a spiritual experience of sorts for me.

5) Writing: Writing a good piece gives me a high like no other, and it usually lasts for a few days!

6)  Sweets: I have a set of Sweet-32 teeth! I could live without food but not without sweets! Ah, the bane of my weighing scale!

7)  Traveling: I am an enthusiastic traveler and learn and grow with each trip.

8)  Helping People: In whichever way I can. Strangely it has backfired many a times, but that doesn’t deter me.

9) Meeting new people: New people lead to fresh perspectives, newer ideas and these lead to growth. Speaking only for myself here, btw 🙂

10 Day ‘You’ Challenge: 10 Secrets

10 Secrets

1) I LOVE Bollywood gossip! It is my stress buster!
2) I cannot drive. Despite a valid driving license, AND learning it thrice. Yes, I am duly ashamed of the fact.
3) I cannot ride a bicycle either. Yes, ashamed of that too.
4) I was a borderline OCD (and very annoying to live with I assure you, ask my sister) but I am all good now.
5) I am extremely organized though. Despite being a Gemini.
6) I mostly wear the clothes and shoes I have shopped for immediately, right out of the store.
7) I compliment random strangers. No, I do not think there is anything strange about saying nice things to people.
8) Till 4 years ago I did not know cooking, at all. I learnt cooking online, through blogs and sites. I now also have a food blog.
9) I was nicknamed Baby as a child. I refused to answer to it after I turned 10. Since then I am Mayuri, to one and all.
10) The first thing I notice about people are their teeth and their feet. And I am obsessive about keeping mine in ship shape.

Saw this BlogChallenge on Novemberschild blog and I knew I had to do it!:)
